Secondary Social Science: The DBQ Start to Finish
Wednesday April 9, 2025 8:00am - 3:00pm PDT
This session focuses on utilizing the DBQ Project to enhance student comprehension and historical writing skills. It covers effective classroom strategies, including the K.E.Y. strategy, AVID annotation techniques, and cooperative learning structures to help students identify a document’s main idea, follow a structured learning path, and articulate how evidence from documents supports their essays. Participants will engage in hands-on practice with these strategies while working through sample documents and all six steps of the DBQ process. Additionally, the session focuses on developing students' writing skills by guiding them in crafting clear thesis statements rooted in the essential question, organizing coherent body paragraphs, and constructing focused topic sentences. It emphasizes that while not every DBQ assignment requires a five-paragraph essay, each should conclude with a synthesis piece that thoughtfully connects to the DBQ’s essential question.

The purpose of our committee is to decide on one benchmark platform that we would use across the district. : Leveraging the DBQ project in secondary History
Tuesday April 22, 2025 4:00pm - 5:00pm PDT
  1. The Why Session: Leveraging the DBQ project in secondary History. We can start with why we're using the DBQ project. What can it replace in your teaching? How does it bring writing and critical thinking into the classroom, directly relating to the HSS framework. We’ll look at the continuous use of primary and secondary sources, identifying point of view and author bias, incorporating McRel's ideas for best first instruction, Avid annotating techniques and cooperative structures. We will discuss the 6 parts of the DBQ project and how to successfully facilitate each part. Teaching with the DBQ project doesn't always mean constant five-paragraph essays—it can be broken down into smaller assignments to complement the existing curriculum.

The purpose of our committee is to decide on one benchmark platform that we would use across the district. The committee's purpose will be to create a rubric as the method in which we will evaluate benchmark assessment platforms, vet our platforms against the rubric and make a recommendation on the assessment platform we will adopt for the district. We are looking for a diverse perspective and representation in this committee: teachers of varying grade levels or subject areas from different schools and different benchmark platforms getting utilized.
